Configuration of Exchange Server 5.5
A brief setup guide for Exchange 5.5. Note: POPcon does not use SMTP authentication — Exchange 5.5 must be configured to accept anonymous SMTP connections.
1. Install the Internet Mail Service (IMS)
The IMS component handles SMTP for Exchange 5.5. It may not be installed by default — install it from the Exchange 5.5 installation CD if needed.
2. Add the IMS in Exchange Administrator
Open Exchange Server Administrator and add the Internet Mail Service under the Connections section.
3. Configure IMS Settings
- Routing tab: Add your internet domain and set it to route to “<inbound>” to receive SMTP email for your domain.
- Connections tab: Select Inbound and outbound. For outbound, configure DNS routing or an ISP SMTP relay server.
- Address-Space tab: Add SMTP address space
*. Allow unauthenticated SMTP from all hosts (or restrict to the POPcon host IP only). - Delivery Restrictions tab: Accept email from all sources; restrict to nobody for sending.
- Internet Mail tab: Set the postmaster/administrator account.
4. Install and Configure POPcon
- Download and install POPcon from the download page.
- General tab: Enter a postmaster email address.
- POP3/IMAP tab: Add mailbox accounts (server, username, password, port). Ports: POP3 110, POP3-SSL 995, IMAP 143, IMAP-SSL 993.
- Exchange tab: Enter the Exchange server name.
- Click Trigger mail retrieval to test.
